Session 1 - Bridge the Gap: Rediscover, Reimagine, and Reignite Your Passion and Approaches to Strengthen Students’ Academic Competencies

In a world that seems to be continually changing, educators must rediscover key intellectual virtues’ benefits. The formation of intellectual character produces a way of life that demonstrates love for God and others (Dow, 2013). With this spirit of change and transformation, educators need to recharge and reenergize their excitement and enthusiasm as they implement the research-based techniques of the NILD Educational Therapy approach with intentionality to develop students’ big picture thinking and academic capabilities. Goals/objectives of this session include:

  • Rediscover the constructs of intellectual character that form the foundation of academic competencies
  • Reimagine approaches to teaching and modeling effective thinking routines
  • Reignite your intentionality for making thinking visible using big picture concept mapping

Session 2 - Bridging Lifelong Learning to Life: Rediscover advancing student thinking and learning by building core academic skills

Engineering a successful learning experience for our students takes purposeful planning on the part of every educator. The focus of NILD Educational Therapy is developing clear and efficient thinking, and improving a student’s overall ability to think, reason, and process information.  NILD techniques emphasize basic academic skills such as reading, writing, spelling, and math, as well as applying reasoning skills within each area. This intervention improves students’ core academic skills to learn and retain content. The goal of NILD Educational Therapy is to help students develop tools of independent learning in the classroom and life.  Goals/objectives of this session include:

  • Introduce/discuss new NILD technique goals
  • Rediscover ways that NILD techniques develop core academic skills
  • Redesign NILD educational therapy session to use building core academic skills to advance student thinking

Session 3 - Building Competence and Confidence: Reimagine how to build students’ academic knowledge, beliefs, and dispositions

How can we help students understand that there is more to academic knowledge than just getting good grades and fulfilling requirements? It is critical to help students understand how they view knowledge and how those knowledge beliefs can make a difference in their lives. Beliefs about the sources of knowledge will influence our decision-making processes, guide critical thinking practices, and facilitate self-regulated learning (Bakx, VanDer Sanden, Sijtsma, Croon, & Vermetten, 2006). Additionally, recent research supports NILD’s methodological approach that education for our students should be organized around developmentally supportive relationships, well-scaffolded instruction supporting the development of the social/emotional, cognitive, and academic skills, as well as resilient mindsets for students to view themselves as competent, confident learners (Darling-Hammond, Flook, Cook-Harvey, Barron & Osher, 2019). This session will:

  • Examine the role of academic knowledge in the knowledge economy
  • Develop students’ academic knowledge competence by teaching students’ adaptability
  • Reimagine how to strengthen student’s competence by facilitating academic beliefs (e.g., self-efficacy, mindset, and belonging) and dispositions (e.g., learner identity) that support the growth of academic knowledge

Session 4 - Bridging the Gap: Reigniting student academic learning in teletherapy and in-person learning

Maintaining each educational therapy session’s standards and procedures is crucial, whether we meet with our students via teletherapy or in-person. It is essential for NILD educational therapists to focus on specific guidelines regarding how the integrity of the NILD techniques should be maintained. Professional development and ongoing relevant training provide guidance and support as we develop our skills, virtually or in-person. Intentional planning and mediation are essential ingredients to reigniting your student’s academic learning. Researchers have also found that developing curiosity in our students helps to motivate their learning and is associated with better learning outcomes.  Goals/objectives of this session include:

  • Planning effective teletherapy to develop students’ academic learning
  • Reigniting your mediation to develop your students’ academic learning in teletherapy and in-person
  • Enhancing students’ intellectual curiosity to facilitate academic learning
